The 60-year-old musician at one stage picked up a “keytar” (an electric keyboard which is worn over the shoulder like a guitar) before lying down and writhing on the stage floor to the delight of the crowd. It was Wonder’s first concert in the Middle East and he played for more than an hour, performing hits such as Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours.

Thousands of dance music fans flocked to Yas Island last night to hear the Dutch DJ Tiesto play to a capacity crowd at the Flash Forum venue. Tiesto’s performance was part of the Yas Island Show Weekends 2011, which last weekend saw guitar legend Eric Clapton delight music lovers with some of his classic hits.

A weekend of Real Action Heroes on Yas Island will begin and end with Tony Hawk. Hawk, the first skateboarder to complete a full 900-degree manoeuvre in competition, will perform at 3.45 pm today and 8.30pm tomorrow on a half-pipe that was imported from the US.

Abu Dhabi’s largest developer confirmed yesterday it was on track to deliver 2,600 units in the Al Raha Beach area this year. The company also expects to open the first phase of Motor World, its collection of new and used car showrooms, in April. Aldar announced a funding plan this month under which the Abu Dhabi Government would buy Dh10.9 billion (US$2.9bn) of the company’s infrastructure assets on Yas Island, Dh5.5bn of residential units and land, and issue a Dh2.8bn convertible bond.

Princess Victoria, the crown princess of Sweden, travelled all the way to the UAE to visit the Ikea store that will soon open on Yas Island, but drew the line at a Ferrari World stop, saying she would not be riding the famous coaster anytime soon. After a tour of the iconic Swedish store, she talked to a few Ikea employees and went outside to plant a tree in the parking area.
